Learning Literacies in a Digital Age : Jisc

Learning Literacies for the Digital Age was a research study that aimed to find out what literacies learners require and what UK HE and FE institutions are doing to support them. The completed study informs JISC and the wider UK FE and HE communities by providing a better understanding of learning literacies, how they are evolving, how requirements are changing, and how they may be supported in different contexts

Merit pages are created by the members of the network, so employers, universities etc can add your contributions to them.  I don't have an account but it plays to the credentials theme and also portfolios.  My only concern might be that as you don't own it yourself, or add to it, you cannot add context or learn from using it.

A few weeks ago, when the computer AlphaGo beat the (human) Go world champion, some of the more sensationalist media commentators asked whether one day computers would overtake humans entirely, and perhaps even enslave us. I remember standing in the kitchen of my flat, laughing at the sci-fi absurdity of this idea - little suspecting that within days I would be wondering whether the Algorithmic Tyranny was already underway, and whether free and open political discussion had already become its victim.

An interesting position paper from San Jose State, not sure of the date but I'm guessing 2013/14 because of the Mooc references.  This does have relevancy in UK, not the Moocs but the concepts behind readying universities in changing to meet the needs of society.  In particular the references to styles of learning and delivery. UK quality assurance processes ensure that what we do with new technologies and processes should mean that we enhanc existing practices.  Worth a read for ideas on how to adapt to your country context.

UCISA Social Media Toolkit - a practical guide for achieving benefits and managing risk

This Toolkit stems from growing interest in the use of social media within the UCISA community. With institutional stakeholders looking increasingly to their information services departments for support in this area, our members sought a reference guide to help them answer a range of questions on related topics. More than that, however, they were seeking practical, contextual examples of use that would inspire others within their institution to take advantage of the affordances of a set of tools that offer new forms of engagement and ways to enhance many aspects of everyday business practice. We would like to thank the numerous UCISA colleagues, and others within the wider higher education community, who have contributed to the production of this Toolkit by providing examples and reviewing content. We hope the examples given here will encourage many more of you to try new approaches to supporting core university functions via social media tools.

I love this. You can select what you want to do, which platform and then the apps are selected for you. There are some that are not there but it is a good starting point for people unsure what to do. I wish JISC resources were designed in this way (ie toolkits!)

Abstract (Open Journal) 

"As the digital world becomes enmeshed with our physical world, identities become public by default, and this can have disastrous consequences for those whose digital identities are deemed socially unacceptable. For scholars, considerations of public identity are especially critical, as academia functions in many ways as a reputational economy (Willinsky, 2010). Thus, while concerns over digital footprint are widespread amongst the general population, they become particularly pressing for academics, but avoiding digital spaces entirely is increasingly a non-viable option as institutions of higher education expand into digital domains. As well, there are many affordances made possible by various forms of digital scholarship (Veletsianos and Kimmons, 2012). Many scholars are therefore tasked with the necessity of navigating a digital culture that is quick to judge and reluctant to forgive. In this paper, we theorise the ontological foundations of (digital) identity in order to better understand the complexity of academics’ online participation. 

 We explore the conceptualization of identity as fixed and unitary or as a coherent whole from which we might select ‘acceptable identity fragments’ to present in public online spaces (Kimmons and Veletsianos, 2014). Then, employing a poststructural lens, we theorise the effects of such a modernist epistemology on digital identity and scholarship, including the repercussions of seeing identity as fixed, unitary, and controllable on diverse digital phenomena: cultural hysteria around the permanence of digital footprints; a decreased collective capacity for forgiveness as we lose the ability to forget past misdeeds (Ambrose, Friess, and Van Matre, 2012); increasing occurrences of cybervigilantism in response to acts taken out of context (Ronson, 2015). Finally, we theorise the possibilities and challenges offered by a reimagining of digital selfhood in poststructural terms, as fluid, never complete, and conferring a constrained agency."

Privacy issue or security. Either way should be open and transparent the intention of the use of the monitoring - to prevent or to catch people out. Not very supportive if the latter. Prevention is better than cure.

Some good stuff here. How digital is your leadership?  Lead from the top. This report also includes benefits of digital including what employees think.  There is also a reference to moocs as being a 'new way of learning' not really.  The model we have seen proliferating isn't new, its a broadcast model.  They are right to look at it though as it could lead to change. Worth reading, not very long with useful highlights.
